Create Your Own Crayons

The other day when I was cleaning out the cupboard I found these:

I don't know when the last time I saw these crayons were. They're still good but who really likes to draw with crayon crumbs? I found the perfect solution here to recycle these crayon pieces into new ones.

1. Peel off any remaining paper from crayons.
2. Place crayon pieces in a muffin tin or in metal cookie cutters on a foil lined cookie sheet.

3. Heat oven to 250 degrees.
4. Place muffin tin/cookie sheet in oven and bake until crayons melt, about 10-15 minutes. Remove from oven.

3. Allow to cool. Once completely cool remove from muffin tin. If you're having a hard time getting the crayons out put them in the freezer for a few minutes.

4. Now you're ready to draw!

This is also a fun science experiment. My daughter thought it was neat to see her crayons turn from a solid into a liquid and then back into a solid.

A few notes: This probably isn't the kind of activity you want to do with your new or favorite muffin tin. Another option could be to save your small tin cans that tomato sauce and tomato paste come in to use as molds for your crayons.

  1. Thanks for the headsup on the muffin tin... I've been saving my tin cans... we'll probably make these soon.

  2. Just a note for anyone planning on using cans instead of muffin tins. I used all sorts of cans. The easiest ones to remove the crayons from were tuna cans. The cans with ridges were harder because of the ridges and because they were taller... so they had further to come out. Also, the cans with pop top lids are hard because they have an extra little lip so the crayon gets stuck.
