Simple and Healthy Dr. Seuss Lunch

Dr. Seuss and his books are much loved in our home.  We've made it a family tradition to celebrate his birthday on March 2nd each year.  I find celebrating Dr. Seuss is a fun and magical part of childhood.  My kids won't be little forever and this is a simple way to make it memorable. (To see how we've celebrated in years past click here.)
This year I came up with a simple lunch to surprise my kids with in their school lunch boxes on Monday.

To make these Cat in the Hat string cheeses I simply used a black and red sharpie marker and drew right on the plastic wrapper.

For these "hop on pop-corn" bags I put together this little printable and printed them off onto wax paper bags that I have left over from another project.  (Find printable image at end of post.)

This cutie Lorax came together quickly with two googly eyes and a felt mustache.

I can't wait to pack my kids lunch on Monday.  I hope they get as much of a kick out of their Dr. Seuss lunch as I had making it.

Dr. Seuss Costumes

For school last year my boys needed to dress up like a Dr. Seuss character.  They picked some pretty simple characters and we made some super simple costumes.  Mr. W wanted to be The Lorax and Mr. J was a star-bellied Sneetch.

The Lorax consisted of orange shirt and shorts with a yellow felt Lorax-ish mustache.  So easy!  The Sneetch was only a little more complex . . . but not much!  Yellow shirt and shorts were the basics.  Then I cut out some felt with Wonder Under so I could attach the white "feathers" around the collar and the blue star to the belly.

Really easy costumes but everyone recognized them so it was a success!  Do your kids dress up at school to celebrate Dr. Seuss?

Celebrate Dr. Seuss - Check

Saturday was Dr. Seuss's birthday.
Did you do anything in your family to celebrate?

My plans went as far as reading a few Dr. Seuss books with my kids, eating green eggs (colored with spinach) and ham for dinner and drinking "pink ink" (or strawberry milk).

My daughter was much more proactive than me however.  She came up with all sorts of grand plans all on her own.  We played games like pin the star on the star bellied sneetch, find the lorax under the truffula tree, and oobleck tag.  She also had some crafts planned like the one above where we created a Dr. Seuss animal of our own.  I was so impressed with her creativity and initiative to plan something fun for our family.  We had a fun day celebrating and spending time together.

One Fish, Two Fish

Like Amy, we also celebrated Dr. Seuss.  We love to get out our duplos and create a "Seuss-ville".  This year's creation was lots of fun!

A few years ago we made a "cat-in-the-hat-pizza" and it has now become a tradition!  So easy and so much fun!

And in honor of the Yink who likes to drink pink ink we had a little "pink ink" of our own--or perhaps it was just strawberry milk ;)

We ended the evening with a special treat of "red fish" a la One Fish, Two Fish, Red Fish, Blue Fish.  All of the boys thought that it was pretty special.

We capped the night with a reading of everyone's favorite Dr. Seuss books.

We included a new read this year, "The Boy on Fairfield Street". It is the story of how a boy named Ted became Dr. Seuss.  It was really interesting to my 7-year-old but still a little long.  The younger boys couldn't get into.  I thought it was great! It was fun to learn more about this wonderful author and celebrate his work.

Celebrating Dr. Seuss

Did you remember to celebrate Dr. Seuss' birthday on March 2nd?

We had so much fun at our house.  We're always looking for an excuse to have a party.

We started off the day by making some Thing 1 and Thing 2 hand prints.

Of course we spent most of our afternoon reading, because . . .

You're never to old,
To wacky, to wild,
To pick up a book,
And read to a child.

My kids had a blast making their own wacky Seussville out of Lego's.

And for dinner?  Green eggs and ham!  (And some baked oatmeal with vanilla yogurt.) To make my eggs green I threw them in the blender with some spinach and then scrambled them up in a frying pan.

My kids were thrilled with their green eggs and ham dinner and were completely oblivious to the spinach in the eggs.  They licked their plates clean!

After dinner we read a few more Dr. Seuss books before bed.

Today is gone.
Today was fun.
Tomorrow is another one.

Every day,  from here to there, funny things are everywhere!

How did you celebrate?

Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!

You may be aware that Dr. Seuss' Birthday is coming up on Tuesday, March 2. What a great excuses for a party and to do something fun. We celebrated a week early at our house because next Tuesday I have jury duty. Bummer.

My daughter wanted to know what Dr. Seuss looked like so we found a picture. Then we had some fun . . .

We've never read Bartholomew and the Oobleck before so I decided now would be as good a time as any.

After some good reading we made our own oobleck.

You need:
1 1/2 cups corn starch
1 cup water
A few drops green food coloring

Mix together:

Then have fun.

When rolled together in your hand the mixture will appear dry and solid

If you stop rolling it, it will flow smooth like liquid.

Lots of fun! Give it a try. We had a great time with our oobleck.

We made our own Cat in the Hat hat too.

Tape together two sheets of read construction paper and add white stripes.

Roll and tape into a tube.

Cut a circle for the bottom of the hat.

Cut the inside and tape edges down to form hat brim.

Try it on for fun.

We also had fun reading a few of the many Dr. Seuss books we own. I always think of Dr. Seuss books as being fun and silly but today I realized a lot of his books teach morals as well. They're just all around good books.

Check out this site for some more ideas on how to celebrate Dr. Seuss with your kids.

Have fun!
